Ata Rangi Juliet Syrah 2016

|

This is the third very limited release of this single site Syrah from the Kahu Vineyard on the Martinborough terrace. The first release in 2013 was a fitting tribute to Juliet, a much-loved friend and neighbor. Juliet exemplified elegance, charisma, grace and style – qualities we feel are also well expressed in this Syrah from her family vineyard.

Damson plum, licorice, lavender, tamarind paste and a hint of Garrigue make for a compelling nose.  There is a soft entry to the palate, which then opens out with a flourish to reveal exotic flavours of Chinese five spice and a splash of fresh cedar.  The tannins in the mid palate meld with the fruit weight to give a pleasing depth, with bright acidity re-centering the palate for a long lingering finish.   The warmer season of 2016 has made for a delicious Syrah that will continue to develop with time in bottle.

Nga Waka

Nga Waka was established at Martinborough in 1988. We are a family-owned winegrower producing small volumes of fine Martinborough wine from estate-grown grapes. Our name is taken from Nga Waka A Kupe (The Canoes of Kupe). The three hills, which lie side by side like upturned canoes, form the backdrop for the town of Martinborough and its surrounds.

Legend has it that the hills were formed by the three canoes of the famed Polynesian explorer Kupe, which were carried inland by a huge earthquake and came to rest in the valley behind Martinborough.
